Wates House - what's really happening?

There has been a lot of discussion and concern about the potential use of Wates House in Fareham (Wallington Hill) for asylum accommodation.
Cllr David Hamilton, Lib Dem Group Leader on Fareham Borough Council, has provided clarity on the situation and set out the Liberal Democrat position.
What’s Happening?
The Home Office is considering using Wates House for asylum accommodation, but no final decision has been made.
Fareham Borough Council has no role, but when consulted raised concerns with the Home Office, including the impact on local services, community safety, and the suitability of the site.
Hampshire Police, the Fire Service, and Hampshire County Council have also been consulted.

What Do We Think?
We share the concerns about the suitability of this location. Without reassurance on those concerns, we do not support Wates House being used to house asylum seekers.
However, we believe that the issue should be handled sensibly and responsibly — not used to stoke division and fear.
Misinformation and Public Reaction
Some public comments and posts have created unnecessary alarm. We must not let this issue be politicised to spread fear and division.
We urge the council to continue to provide clear public updates to reassure residents.
We call for calm and respectful discussion — no councillor or member of the community should be targeted over a decision that has not even been made and will not be made locally.
If a decision is taken, we will continue to challenge it if necessary, based on evidence and the best interests of Fareham residents.
